I’'M READY WILLING AND ABLE-BUT WHERE ARE YOU?

- HOW TO RAISE YOUR PRACTICE PROFILE

An ancient Chinese proverb says “- A man can wait long time before crispy fried duck flies off plate into open mouth”.

Whether you are a sole practitioner having a slow day, a junior lawyer vying for partnership or a partner trying to hang onto it- you need to let people know you are there.   If you have the time Rotary, committees and associations are excellent tried and tested methods.  If you don’t have time (and few people seem to nowadays) then an alternative is speaking, radio, legal columns, newsletters, interviews, events, TV, books and other ways of “getting yourself out there”.

Paul Brennan is a practising lawyer but also a legal eagle, columnist, author, legal cartoonist and known as a humourous public speaker.

This lively interactive session will give you useful tools that you can use right away to increase your profile.

MORE DETAIL

Peter Owen executive Group Editor of APN Newspapers said “Lawyers - like financial planners, relationship counsellors and chiropractors – always tend to think their prose is purple and their content compelling. In truth, they usually offer little more than boring plugs for their own business”.

You see this is not just a lawyer problem, chiropractors have it too.

For a busy partner there is some satisfaction in hiring a marketer, telling them to get on with it and then complaining when the clients do not line up outside.  Marketing Departments are also an excellent source of people to lay off during cost cutting exercises.  However promotion even with a full team is a DIY job and needs to be driven by the lawyer if it is to build his or her own profile.   As General Counsel of the FAST, Paul worked with a PR company, the media and 24 major London law firms such as Clifford Chance and Lovells.  He staged events and PR activities to lobby and increase software awareness as part of his anti piracy activities.

Paul has combined this knowledge with his experience of having built three law firms in three different jurisdictions to identify the following 9 competencies for lawyers to build their profile:

  • Giving a legal speech which relates to the audience.
  • Getting copy in the media by writing and promoting a press release.
  • Becoming a radio legal eagle.
  • Writing a newspaper column.
  • Journalist's interviews-being part of the solution rather than the problem.
  • Becoming a resource for journalists.
  • Writing a book.
  • Getting on TV.
  • Writing a daily blog.

You do not need to be adapt at all the competencies but even one could make a difference to your practice.

Paul Brennan can tell you what has worked and what hasn't worked for him.  This can save you time, money and effort.  He will tell you how he founded the internationally recognised “Employee Legal Awareness Day”, held his own Wills Awareness Week, got his own internet radio program and wrote two books the latest with the title “The Law is an Ass-make sure it doesn't bite yours!”.

Peter Owen said of Paul's column “- terrific, short, to the point, irreverent, funny”.
